The MHRA said the findings, which were published Friday, could put men at increased risk of experiencing sexual problems if they take the erectile dysfunction drug.
A number of websites selling counterfeit versions of the drug also sell the active ingredient, which can be sold under the brand name Viagra. However, Pfizer Inc has yet to comment on the number of websites selling the counterfeit product, or on whether the fake drug was bought from the online pharmacy.
The MHRA said it believed counterfeit Viagra and its related brand name, Cialis, were likely to be sold by the fake drug. It urged men who are concerned about their sexual problems to contact their GP or the MHRA website for advice, and to report any side effects.
A number of men have reported problems getting or maintaining an erection during sex, including difficulties sleeping, a possible liver problem and a rare condition known as priapism, the most common medical problem with Viagra.
The MHRA said counterfeit Viagra and Cialis were also being sold by the fake drug, which is manufactured by Pfizer and distributed to medical facilities across the UK.
In June, the MHRA said it was investigating whether the online pharmacy was operating illegally.
